Came up to Basecamp last night for a short 1.5 day visit. Driving up we go a text message that said there was flooding in Haliburton and if we were ok or not. There was tons of snow up here before the warm temps and it seems that lots of the low areas are flooding. This mean that the Gull river would be kicking ass right now but I’m not in the mood for cold water kayaking so will pass today.
Then as we get closer to the town we see a convoy of Dodge Laramie trucks with tire studs, this is never a good sign as it means that power is out in large areas. We get to the food store and ask if there has been flooding in town etc. Yup lots of the low areas have water in the basements etc. Good news is that Basecamp is on high ground so I do not think (fingers crossed) that this will never be a problem.
Since it is getting late we grab a frozen Pizza and some other basics and cash out. This is when we start talking with the cashier and she mentions how she still does not have power because of the wind storms. Damn! I had forgot about them in the City, she says that they say maybe out till Saturday. As we are walking to the truck we now have visions of sleeping downstairs near the wood stove and eating BBQ frozen pizza and then heading back to the city in the AM as we both need to be working today. We start heading up Harburn road and look for any lights on in the houses. We start seeing some which is a good sign but this does not mean that we have power as the line can break anywhere. We keep checking all the way up and see that person next door has power (cool!).
We start heading up the driveway and then see this large Pine tree fallen across the driveway but since it is so tall it is hung up on the other site. This is where the tow straps come in. I cannot move it by hand but 5 mins setting up a strap to the truck makes short work of it. I might need to buy tires online soon! As we drive up further we go over another smaller one. When we get into the house we see that in the backyard another large pine is down which can only mean I might have more trail cleanup ahead.
