I normally try and use non motorized tools when I can (I have a push mower for example). But after trying to use an Axe and buck saw it was time to get a chainsaw for Basecamp. It is also good to have from a safety point of view.
I did lots of research on what I might need and what to look for. I knew that I was going to get either a Stihl or a Husqvarna. Two of my buddies have Husqvarna and like them this also is what our local dealer sells so this was going to be my first choice. In Minden is the Stihl dealer, I did a recon on the place and it was going to be close to the same price as I was going to spend on the Husqvarna so that made the choice for me. Plus the Husqvarna has a little more power.
I picked a great time to buy a saw as both dealers have a promo on where you get a case, dvd, chain, hat, buck knife (Husqvarna) plus a chunk of the price. I went with a Husqvarna 353. Not the biggest saw but then I’m a small guy and did not want something that would weight a ton. I got a 18″ bar (the length of the blade) which seems to be a standard (the saw can take a 20″).
I also picked up some safety gear that I need (helmet w/screen and ear protection), cutter pants and I had the gloves. Now I’m all set to start getting all the firewood that was have available from the storm last year.

You didn’t really want the chainsaw…you wanted an excuse to get the cool helmet!
Once I get some stickers on it then I think that it will be perfect.
The problem that I’m facing now (as it always it with me) is all the other gear that I need (want) to work in the woods. Tools to flip down logs, hand winches to move stuff (have some from 4×4ing), felling tool and wedges for felling trees.
Plus a stronger back to move all the stuff that I cut!
You won’t regret picking the Husky. We’ve had all types of saws at camp over the last 15 years and since I bought the husky I’ll never buy another kind. It starts great, runs great, cuts great.
Good thinking on the cutting pants – I’ve got a great big blade-chew in mine… I think I might have bled to death without them.
So far it has been great. I did some recon here http://www.arboristsite.com and lots of people like them.
I really hope that my pants stay cut free. I do not have any fat to get in the way and really like not bleeding for some reason.
I am getting a little teary (in a manly, I have saw dust in my eyes, kind of way) seeing Jamie becoming a Husqvarna Boy. I have been for years and never looked back.
Congrats
