multiples the cutting force by nearly three times over single pivot loppers
Doing all the clearing work up at Basecamp has been fun but also a lot of work. The shears that I was using to clear branches on trees for cutting or to move them around is not working anymore (well not very well anyways). It really was not up to the task that I was using it for and I knew that with longer handles I could get more force and cut larger branches.
So yesterday with this in mind I went to the local Home Hardware. Luckily for me there was one PowerGear Bypass Lopper left and it looked perfect for the job. One of the negatives of living up North is that you selection of stuff at stores is limited. There are not big box stores that have aisles and aisles to chose from. In a way this is a good thing but not the best when you want to pick something up on short notice.
So far it is working out great. It cuts thru small trees and any branch with ease. It is making the clearing job that much easier. I like the fact that I can sharpen and replace the cutting blade. I checked the Fiskar website and this is an older model as they have a 2nd generation out but I think that the principal is the same.

If you are looking for a Lopper I would definitely check out the Fiskar line. The quality of the product is top notch and I think that it will gives you years and years of use.
Here are some notes from the site:
* PowerGear® mechanism increases leverage to make cutting 3X easier than single pivot loppers
* Sharp, precision-ground blade edge
* Fully hardened blade holds sharp edge longer
* Corrosion resistant, non-stick blade coating reduces friction to make cutting easier
* Durable and lightweight aluminum handles
* Ergonomic handles fit comfortably in your hands
* Bypass blade-for clean cuts of green, living growth
* Cutting capacity-2 inch
* Lifetime warranty

If you do run into trouble we have had great success with the Mammoth Loppers from Lee Valley (recommended by our Forester.

They look good also. So far these ones have been amazing and the build quality is top notch. I also like the gear used for the power seems to be a simple approach that works.
